Getting fired is rarely pleasant. Getting fired with little warning, losing a paycheck and potentially losing health insurance at the same time is a concept that left one woman in the UK completely stunned.
In a post on Reddit, the woman said she had recently learned about America’s at-will employment system and struggled to understand how workers could be dismissed so quickly.
“Can Americans really be fired at the drop of a hat for no reason no matter how long they have worked for a company?” she asked.
“As someone who lives in the UK, I find this shocking,” she wrote. “What do people do when they get fired? Surely there’s some sort of labour laws to protect them?”
She was especially troubled by the healthcare connection.
“Seems unfair? Especially if they rely on their job for their healthcare?” she wrote. “I can’t imagine working in a country knowing I could be fired at any moment when bills and rent need to be paid!”

The discussion quickly filled with Americans sharing their own experiences.
One commenter described working for the same company for 24 years before receiving a phone call just days before Christmas.
“I worked for the same company for 24 years. They called me at home four days before Christmas and fired me,” the commenter wrote. “They gave the guy I trained my job.”
The employee said there had been no major performance issues and concluded that the replacement was simply cheaper.
“When a business is done with you, they’ll discard you,” the commenter wrote.
The UK woman was taken aback by the story.
“That is crazy and disgusting. Just before Christmas as well!” she replied.
Other commenters described being laid off with immediate effect, struggling to challenge employment decisions, or facing the prospect of paying significantly more to keep health coverage after losing a job.
Can Americans Really Be Fired For No Reason?
The U.S. operates under at-will employment in 49 states. Montana is the exception.
Under at-will employment, employers can generally terminate workers at any time for any legal reason or without providing a specific reason. Employees can also leave a job without notice.

What employers cannot legally do is fire someone for certain protected reasons, including discrimination based on race, sex, religion, disability or age. Retaliation for certain protected activities, such as whistleblowing or filing workplace complaints, is also prohibited under federal law.
The challenge, many commenters noted, is proving that an illegal reason was the real reason.
One commenter shared a story about allegedly being passed over for a promotion because of military service obligations. Despite a manager reportedly making comments suggesting that was a factor, the commenter said an attorney believed proving the case would be difficult because the company’s official documentation pointed elsewhere.
That’s where many workers feel vulnerable. While legal protections exist, employers are often not required to provide the kind of lengthy dismissal process common in the UK.
Healthcare Makes The Issue More Complicated
For many Americans, losing a job can trigger another immediate concern: health insurance.
Unlike the UK, where healthcare is largely separate from employment through the National Health Service, millions of Americans receive health insurance through their employers.
That reality prompted one commenter to write, “So sick health insurance is linked to employment.”
