BOJ Governor Ueda says underlying inflation ’quite close’ to 2% target

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda told a press conference that the core inflation rate, which excludes fresh food and energy, is “quite close” to the central bank’s 2 percent target, reflecting the latest consumer‑price data that showed a modest uptick. He said the trend suggests price pressures are stabilising, giving the BOJ room to consider normalising its ultra‑easy policy after years of negative rates and massive stimulus. Ueda cautioned that the outlook remains fragile, noting that a weaker yen and global supply‑chain shocks could still sway inflation. Nonetheless, the governor signalled a possible shift toward gradual rate hikes if the trend persists.
